One who reads the newspapers and watches TV stations in Lebanon today is overwhelmed with the jubilation over the prisoners and corpses swap between the Government of Israel and … Hizbullah, a private organization. The deal was brokered by the German Government.
As usual, the government of Lebanon played the role of a bystander, spectator and cheerleader for Hizbullah. On this occasion, the president of the country declared Hizbullah a “legitimate power”.
It is always a good thing to free prisoners, even to grant amnesty to convicts on the death row. But a number of simple questions must still be asked. What about Lebanon’s sovereignty? Who authorized the transfer of sovereign power to Hizbullah? Pursuant to which Lebanese law does the party of God operate? How can this organization be held accountable to the people of Lebanon, the only and sole source of all sovereign power?
Where is the rule of law with reference to Hizbullah?
President Lahoud is wrong. Hizbullah is not a legitimate power, at least not under the constitution of Lebanon.
