About Lebanese "News"
CGGL Editorial Staff 9/12/2000
Although we are not, strictly speaking, a news web site, yet we believe in the famed New York Times motto: "All the News That's Fit to Print". The fact is that there are very few news stories from Lebanon in the proper sense of the word, and even fewer stories that are fit to publish. Unfortunately, most of the so-called news stories published in Lebanon is trash, pure and simple.
Witness the TV daily news broadcasts. They show you President Lahoud and his visitors, Prime Minister Hoss and his visitors, Speaker Berri and his visitors, the various ministers and their visitors, and an assortment of clerics and their visitors. Most of the evening news hours on the local TV channels are carbon copies of each other. This cannot be news!
Check the daily newspapers. Their "news" stories consist of a strange assortment of utterances by the various politicians and quasi politicians and their apprentices and stooges. The "subjects" of such utterances have nothing to do with any national issues of any significance. Every so often there is a new "subject" for the daily statements carried by the papers as "news". The utterances are credited to names that are both standard and familiar: Hoss, Hariri, Jumblatt, Lahoud, Murr, Khouri, etc., etc. Ninety nine per cent of the time such utterances are worse than garbage. Yet the papers keep printing them and the TV and radio stations keep broadcasting them.
In short, the people of Lebanon are fed all this diet of less than garbage on a daily basis, several doses a day, to the extent of poisoning the minds of the Lebanese and pushing them towards losing their orientation, their balance, and their sense of what is right and what is wrong with their alleged government and the country's alleged political class. It is such a big shame. So do not expect to see any of this trash when you open our web page! What we bring to your attention must be real news, and must have an impact, whether negative or positive, on the cause of good governance for Lebanon and the issues associated therewith. The idea is to become conscious of the national ills and shortages, and to develop an awareness of what to do about them. This requires knowledge and facts, hard facts, and not irresponsible and baseless utterances coupled with meaningless photo opportunities.
